FIRA
Fira is the capital of the island. Early in the 19th century the capital of the island was moved from Pyrgos to Fira. After the earthquake of 1956 a part of the town was destroyed (only a small part of the 18th century buildings were saved).
Plateia Theotokopoulou (Theotokopoulou Square) is the main square of Fira and it is where all the locals meet. The small streets during peak season period are crowed and filled with all kind of shops, jewelleries, cafe, restaurants, bars and night clubs.
Things to do:
1. Museum of Prehistoric Thera
Using finds from various excavations, this museum traces the course of prehistoric Thira from the late Neolithic to the late Cycladic I period.
2. Santozeum Museum
Contains copies and descriptions of Akotiri frescoes and video presentation on Princeton computer project that helped piece the artifacts.
3. Archaeologic Museum
A fine collection of geometric red and black vases from the fifth century BC. The museum also hosts impressive frescoes as well as sculptures of the Hellenistic period, Byzantine works of art and even some remains of prehistoric times.
4. Megaro Gyzi, Museum
An exhibition of authentic engravings with maps, landscapes and dresses of the Cycladic islands from the 15th to 19th century. An exhibition of old manuscripts from late 16th to 19th century. A collection of paintings and photographs of Santorini.
5. Lignos Folcore Museum.
The museum is an old winery with workshops for carpenters, barrel makers, shoemakers and tinsmiths and an art gallery.
6. Old port in Fira
At the small harbor you will find Duty-free stores, restaurants and small shops. The only way up and down to the town is the donkeys, the cable car or to walk although (we don't recommend walking).
7. A walk from Fira to Imerovigli
The views are absolutely fantastic on the way from Fira to Imerovigli.
